Not really. I think 4chan started the whole make fun of that specific comic thing. The guy randomly puts up a serious comic about how they had a miscarriage and I guess some people were like WTF LOL?!

I'll give you the bullet points of CAD hate.

1.) Art recycling. Tim Buckley rarely draws anything for his comic anymore. Most of it is copy/pasted stuff. The backgrounds are just images stolen from GIS and given a photoshop filter.
2.) Some people refer to the creator as B^Uckley, as all the character's facial expressions can usually be described as B^U. They've got slightly narrowed eyes, a nose and a slack mouth. It's all copypasta.
3.) Too many fucking words. Surely you've noticed just how needlessly wordy the comic you posted is.

I seriously fucking doubt anyone would consider Watchmen or Sin City as a laugh riot. Writers like to expand their horizons and repetoires beyond just the same shit day in and day out. Whether or not you think it was funny immaterial, he was doing it because he thought it was an interesting subject, not intended to be funny.

TL;DR: don't like it? Get over it and go read Penny Arcade.

Awright, if this is gonna turn into a hijacking wank I'll start another thread, but... sorry, that just doesn't hold water.

CAD is just a silly webcomic with two dimensional characters which is fine, all actual faults with the comic aside. But at this point any attempt to "add depth" to the characters has to be handled carefully. The thing is, the characters haven't grown. Beyond any brief moments of introspection, they're still the cardboard cutouts that they've always been. The miscarriage arc is every bit as inappropriate in CAD as it would be if it was handled by, say, Disney and the couple involved was Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Besides, it's a baldfaced lie, what Buckley says he's trying to do. He never tries to expand. Not in humor, certainly not in art (as much copy/paste as he can get away with and then some), and finally not in writing. What I'd bet real money on is this: He realized he wrote himself into a corner with the pregnancy gag and desperately tried to come up with an "undo" button.

This isn't a transition to a more varied kind of storytelling. It's jumping the shark.

Sin City and Watchmen were two examples of works that started out dramatic and serious with the odd bit of dark humor here and there. There was no abrupt transition from "haha silly" to "slice of life drama." A more apt comparison between a graphic novel and CAD would be Frank Miller's Hard Boiled: Both are utter shit.
