Borrowed FEAR from a mate, hearing that it was a good scary game but found it dull.
Think I'd had enough traipsing through corridors and sewers after HL.

Can anyone recommend any real-scary games? Old or new,

Wait until it's dark out, when everyone else has gone to bed, close the blinds on your window, turn off all the lights, plug in a set of headphones and play the first Alien vs. Predator (the marine campaign).

Much, much better game than the second one, absolutely scared the shit out of me.

Oh my god...playing AVP2 scared the bejesus out of me so many times that I ended up getting that SMART gun and killing aliens that way.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

1920s, mutated village folk, a crazy cult, creatures older than the earth hunting you down. Scary enough? Now add the fact you gt no weapons for the first third of the game, and that when you do you realise most of the enemies won't die.

Classic horror gaming.

I've also heard great things about Clive Barker's Undying, though I've never tried it myself.

I can't remember which Theif version but there was a monster that allways scared crap out of me and, sounded like it should really give up smoking and ofcoruse thier was those mechanical foes also.Apart from that don't really know of any specific horror scary games.

Edit:There was allway Nightmare creatures i remember this because it was a Playstation 1997 port to pc It's pretty old but i remeber that being qite good first time around will post some screens in [NWS]Random Game Screenshot Thread with more info later, also the very first Medal of honor Playstation version was scary in parts too.Others i can think of are: House of the dead 1/2/3 for pc not vary scary but where good fun to play.

you can never go wrong with the Silent Hill series, preferably 2 and 3 (stay away from The Room though)

Condemned: Criminal Origins for the 360 or PC should give you a good 6-8 hour scare.

For the ultimate panic-inducing paranoia, play Hard mode. If you're not smart, enemies will take you out with a single hit from a Sledgehammer or Crowbar.

Penumbra : Overture
and the New penumbra: black plague or something (havent played).

First time I installed Overture I didn't play it anymore because I was too afraid to play it, its fucking freaky shit.

I've reinstalled again a few months later (tonight), and I still don't wanna play!

It's got a cool atmosphere and setting but, f me it's scary. Try it if you're after something

What the crap? So many posts and still no mention of System Shock 2???

By far the scariest games I've ever played. And the fear factor feels much more natural and believable than the typical "boo zombie!" from most horror games.

Hmm...

There are

Silent Hill
Clock Tower (Only the SNES and the first PSX one named Clock Tower)
Haunting Ground
Fatal Frame series
Resident Evil really isnt all that scary, but it may be for you
I hear Thief is pretty creepy

SS2 was actually enjoyable for me, bc I played it COOP via lan with my bro. Unlimited lives, FTW! :D

Bingo! THE scariest PC game ever.
After you beat it on normal as a grunt try it on "hard" with only melee weapons and psi skills.
Also the 3-part free HL1 mod They Hunger from PCGamer
is zombie-licious.
Thief series is terrifying if you hate the dark and SPIDERS,
otherwise the best sneaker game there is.

Hmm

Fatal Frame series
Haunting Ground
Clock Tower (Try out the SNES one through a rom, or the first PSX one)
Resident Evil isnt that scary but give it a shot. The first one as a remake is probably the creepiest, the rest really sort of focus on action
Silent Hill 1 and 3 have been the scary ones for me
You also may want to try Obscure out. Its not really scary persay but its survival horror style and it has 2 player coop gameplay.

Personally, I like games where your attack options are limited and you basically need to run and hide to escape your pursuer. Clock Tower and Haunting Ground follow this style.
