Can a US citizen become a Canadian citizen without renouncing a US citizenship?
I think I'll be a political refugee if Barack wins. I always wanted to live in another country anyway.

I used to have dual Citizenship with Canada, but I had to get rid of it for my top secret clearance.

If they didn't let people get away with it for GW's "re"-election, they certainly won't for anyone else...ever.

Well I was joking about the politcal refugee part. But I'd like to experience another country for a few years. and I have more in common with Steven Harper than I do with Barack Obama.

it's tough to do, from what i can tell. And you can't get dual citizenship unless you are born into it. Whether Canada requires you to renounce your US citizenship or not, i'm quite sure that the US takes away your citizenship if you elect to be a citizen of another country.

whats weird is, when i was living in Washington, i was right on the border of Canada, and i kept hearing about a thing being passed that would pretty much make an American drivers license a passport into Canada. They said that they would be doing this in a few months, however i forgot about the whole thing and almost a year later after i've moved back to Oregon, i now just remembered this.
Ahem, my point is ... Does anyone know what the hell im talking about ?!??!

I know that you can get dual citizenship with Ireland if you have a relative of yours (whom you can prove) that came to this country with in 4 generations (maybe 3).

Here's a link to a US citizen who actually went through the process. He's not a lawyer but seems to have done a lot of research on the subject because it pertains to his family.
Here's one of the relevant bits.
I, too, am a dual citizen of both the US and Canada -- a citizen of the US because I was born in the US, and a citizen of Canada because I went through the Canadian naturalization process (an action which did not cause me to lose my US citizenship).

You sure your not thinking of Ancestral visa's for visiting Ireland???

Errr - there's nothing to stop you from living in another country, even just for a short time. You dont have to give up your nationality. Girl in my office is from the States, she's not given up her nationality.

Anyway, you can get dual citizenship. If one of your parents is canadian, you may already have everything you need for canadian citizenship. Children born from canadian parents are still considered canadian citizens if they are born in another country.
If not, canada has recognized dual citizenship since the 70's, and the states for over a decade.
