I finally picked it up (30 bucks for all three games, not bad) and I really like it. I used to play Warhammer as the Imperial Guard (I didn't use the Cadians though, I used Praetorian Guard) so I find it pretty enjoyable.

That reminds me, now that I've replaced my HDD I need to reinstall it. I can't wait for the Soulstorm expansion.

Never liked Cadians either (especially the new ones), always prefered Mordian's. Only decent new IG legion they've released in years was the Steel Legion.

Bunch of them die, Empire of Man forgets about them thinking they were wiped out, and they come back with a vengeance. Best backstory ever.

i played the first two games, they were good. I sucked though. Problem was I was too stubborn to play anything but Orks.

I suck at RTS games but so far CoH is the only one that induced such rage that I threw my headset across the room, shattering it.

I miss that thing.

is soulstorm gonna be like dark crusade where you have to invade areas by turn and all that stuff?

Speaking of Guard models we like and dislike... I wish there were more Rough Rider options than "Mongolololol". I thought it'd be cool to have some based on late 1800s US Cavalry, but doing that would require more conversion work than I'm capable of.

Yep, only you get to do it on several planets.

gaw, i like the regular DoW and winter assault play style. i don't like to micromanage although it's really not a lot. i guess i just prefer a straight story line

If you could get me some concept sketches I'd be tempted to throw together a 3D model of it for you.

Guard rocks, probably the best thing about the Guard is that you could theoretically field an army inspired by any army in human history. I've had inspirations in the past to field a Zulu army once, using models from another company converted to carry lasguns.

It's too bad that GW doesn't make the older minis anymore, like the Valhallans and Tallarns and whatnot.

Used to be some Tallarn models that would make for an awesome Bedouin-style force. If you go to the Forge World website there's some really nice looking WWI-style Rough Riders for the Death Korps of Kriegs, with gas masks on the horses and everything. They're not cheap, though, like all FW stuff.

I never finished the orginal DoW campaign. I have a habit of not finishing some games i enjoy.
Though it probably had more to do with that i started playing company of heroes.

Squad combat RTS ftw.

Anyway, installed DoW again. Hopefully ill finish it this time.

Don't think they're really worried about the PC of it (they have political commissars already lol), think these were more to go along with the new 'trench' and 'siege' rules they came up with. Just a bitch they're so expensive. Reminds me of the old days when IG regiments were about £18 for 10 models :(

Love the bren carrier style tank they've made to tow the siege guns too.

Very True. I collected this stuff in the early days of Rogue Trader and the original Blood Bowls & Space Hulk. At the age you firstly get interested in this stuff, say 14, you've got no hope in affording bugger all. £10 for 2 Epic Land Raiders ?? I dont think so. Not on pocket money.

Acutally it was kinda the opposite for me. Got into it when i was a kid around 7 or 8 when BattleMaster came out (watered down version launched by MB if I remember right). Wasn't until around 14/15 that I realised I musta spent near a grand of them over the years (birthday/xmas presents, pocket money etc) and packed it in. Still have a shit load of them about, should sell them really or atleast bother to paint them lol

Once this semster is over I'm gonna try and make a high poly Imperial guard model, just for old times sake lol

Awesome idea.

I might have to do something similar, was more of a Warhammer than 40k fan though. I did have a small collection of the Guards though, one platoon and a weapons platoon with a Chimera painted out in some bitching snow camo.

Valhallans iirc.

Not really. The Blood Ravens are completely absent from Winter Assault, and while they're back in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, the companies involved are not commanded by Gabriel Angelos (he doesn't even have a cameo). I suppose this is somewhat understandable though because I'm pretty sure Angelos' voice actor is the narrator in those two.

For continuation of the vanilla DoW storyline, you really have to pick up the books by C.S. Goto.

P.S. Multilaser.

Tried out soulstorm. Doesnt seem to have any story line at all.

Sort of wondering why the sisters, imperial gaurd and space marines would be even fighting each other in it.

Do the previous two expansions have an actual story line?

Winter Assault does.

With Dark Crusade and Soulstorm the storyline is pretty much determined by which race you play. There's a narration when you defeat each race.

Sisters of Battle fight the Guard because obviously they are cowardly and corrupt for things to have gotten so far out of hand. They fight the Space Marines because the Space Marines refuse to cede authority to the Ecclesiarchy, a sure sign of heresy in their eyes.

The Guard is fighting everyone because they want to take back their system as a matter of pride and are unwilling to give up command to anyone.

Dark Crusade absolutely screwed the gameplay up because of the Necrons. I loved to play as Imperial Guard, and Necrons simply cannot be beat. Winter Assault was decent but it always came down to blob wars, which is why I moved onto Company of Heroes...then that turned into blob wars again with the expansion (or so I've heard).
