Anybody here have much experience with the PC versions of RISK available? I honestly played my first real game of Risk last week over spring break, and had a pretty good time of it. Started out in North America, took South America, swept into Asia, took Europe, forced my way into Australia, and marched onto near complete domination of Africa. Madagascar was the only remaining country outside of my iron-fisted rule, but we stopped (because the game was pretty long) and decided that every oppressive global government needed a small scapegoat every once in a while.
You know, to keep things interesting.
Anyway, if the games are good, I'd be willing to throw in some internet gaming time with a few folks in TMH.
(This goes for official stuff and Sourceforge.net freeware games.)

love this game, but sometimes it can be seriously frustrating. especially when the dice are against you the whole game. always go for australia first unless you're playing where australia and south america are connected. i would like to try risk 2049
i have risk II for the pc. it wasn't bad but i'd much rather play the game with my friends. not to mention i don't like the way the dice roll it seems too, how do i say, fixed. at least the randomness of the dice in real life are from my own doing, not the computer.

I stopped playing risk when I lost 5 battalions to a single guy on the North American Continent. NEVER again. Try Axis & Allies instead; there is still bullshit but at least it is more tolerable.

Agree I used to play axis and allies on the old MSN Game Zone (Now defunkt) I think you can play risk via gamespy.
Unfortunatly the dice roll for risk could be manipulated. If I remember correctly it was modem or lan only. So you need a program that emulates TCIP for lan. Ask backrat he gave me a neet program for Master of Orion 2. Unfortunatly by bud has a wife n 2 boys so we never played.
Another thing is the XP compatability. Risk was 95. But there is a dos version,

Risk 2 and the 95 version are better. Unfortunatly the risk version I have has a ton of buggs. It's this one

Depending on what soundcard you have as well.

Whenever I play Risk, the dice always destroy me. It doesn't matter if I have 4:1 odds in my favor, I get raped. Risk 2049 is actually a little more forgiving, and there are some additional things that are neat about it.
Axis & Allies is probably the most fun, although that game board has been flipped many many times in my expierence. There's not as much bullshit like Azevedo said, but it's infinitely more destructive when it happens.

I have Axis and Allies but my friends never want to play. I guess because we all don't understand the rules completely

I've got an old expansion for the A&A bord game. It is the second edition. Came with a new map and extra units like ss troops, marines and partisans. New rules and crusers, battleships took 2 hits. I laminated the map. However I can't find the expansion for the life of me!
Anyone know which one this was?
Also you must patch the A&A PC game or it won't work propery.

I've looked into Axis & Allies, and the D-Day version really caught my eye. But I hear that's very squad based, and I'd rather go for a miniature wargame for that.
On the whole, I think Risk fills a very fun, lightweight role. I can drink beer, play it, and still possibly come through with a good standing.
But there are a bunch of interesting houserules that make strategy more important over lucky dice rolls. Which don't bother me, as I have a bag of lucky dice.

Many a day have I wasted playing Risk, the tabletop version, none of this computer malarky.
Always go for Australia first, then skulk round the bottom of Asia into Africa and round the other edge upto Alaska. Then I decide which is weaker to go for, North America or Africa and charge in. Followed by some minor bashing in South America. Always tend to avoid Asia/Europe till the end.

Always go for Australia first,
:orly: Well what happens if another player goes there? Then you both fight it out to the point where whoever is left to take the continent can not hold it. I remember my buds did that. so I put all my guys on northern africa and china. Then when the winner took the continent. I moved in from china and kept him from keepin it.
After a few turns the bord flipped over accidentaly.

If you are looking for a very good board game with a ton of strategy, try getting ahold of a copy of Cosmic Encounters. It is very simple and straightforward, but extremely deep in detail in regards to how the game plays out.
