so...i think this is a really hot topic, im surprised we don't have a thread for it. personally i think they should be charged with attempted murder. 6 vs 1 could seriously injure or even kill a person. well discuss!

I have no idea what this thread is about, but it doesn't sound especially newsworthy.
Anyone care to fill me in?

They took turns beating on her so that they could post it on youtube and be famous. Well they got their wish...

Thanks Meelee
...still not seeing how this is majorly newsworthy though. Bunch of kids ganged up and beat another up, it happens all the time. At least it was 'just' physical, rather than the emotional abuse that usually hallmarks teenage relationships.

My opinion on it is that they are making it a bigger story than it is because of the internet side of it. It lets the media talk about how myspace and youtube affect children and blah blah. They did do a number on the girl though. She is partially blind in one eye and deaf in one ear because of this.

Well, no disagreement that that certainly sucks for the victim. I still stand by that this isn't any majorly newsworthy event, and you're probably right that certain media sources are blowing it out of proportion to take advantage of the internet factor.

Is this the same story where fucking Dr. Phil bailed them out?

Yep.
They paid $30,000 to bail one of them out of jail so that they could come on the show. As soon as the media found out they canceled the show.

Who gives a shit? Some girls beat someone up and caused permanent damage to her just to become famous on the internet AND YOU FAGS ARE GIVING THEM THAT.
If I were dictator for life, you'd never hear about school shootings and other crimes motivated by a desire for infamy. A media blackout would be imposed, and if they were alive to be arrested they would be tranquilized and shoved out of a plane at 15,000 feet over the middle of the Pacific ocean, and any records of their existence would be deleted. If their families were ever caught mentioning them in public, they would get the same treatment.

Remember when Gangs had all those guys attack him? And he ended up beating off 6 guys at once?
Why couldn't she do that?

They kidnapped someone, brought her somewhere, took turns beating her, videotaped it and put it on the internet for thousands/millions to see. They're bunch of fucking skids. This is a big deal in my opinion.

disclaimer: im pretty close to being drunk as a skunk.
I would try them as adults. Im not sure what exactly I would charge them with though. Assualt for sure but kidnapping is a possibility too. What really pisses me off about this is that when they were all arressted they were all happy to be together in their holding cell and asked one of the guards "are we going to be able to go to cheerleading practice tomorrow?"
I would imagine that these are the same kind of chicks that i thought were really hot in high school but were so fucking stupid and annoying that i didnt even find them attractive.

Sounds like simple sociopathic mentalities. Just like what you'd expect from America's sweethearts. :)

This story actually sounds alot like the movie 'Bully', you should all go see it. As for punishment, how to punish those who aren't even aware of their wrong doings?

Not aware? They lure her into a house to beat her up and film it. That sounds pretty illegal to me, and it would've when I was 14.

Yeah, NOT AWARE. It probably felt quite justified to them at the time.

If you run someone over and just keep driving because you weren't aware of the law, that doesn't make it okay, dismissible, or anything of the sort.
Remember these people were aged 14-18.

The same way that you punish someone that is aware. Like Burris mentioned, they are old enough to know what they are doing.
So you'd think this wasn't a big deal if one of your children was involved in this? Would you only think it was a big deal if someone got killed or raped?

Television culture, negative icons, peer pressure, there are many elements that are out of our control -- when children look up to TV characters as examples, when the 'mean' kid is the cool one, when the rules of their environment defy the official ones, these incidents are bound to happen. Of course they need to be punished, and severly, this is a terrible act -- but what is more terrible is that these six girls most likely hadn't any idea quite how terrible it truly was.
For this to change we need more control over the enducation of children, influence needs to be put back into the hands of those worthy of it.

i think they were aware of what wrong they were doing, just didn't fully realize it until they got arrested and a whole country hated them. can't use "they weren't aware" because those girls aged 14 to 18. i understand if they were like in preschool or had a mental handicap but they're old enough to know the difference.

Sounds contradicting but I do get what he's trying to say.
You also can't blame the media or such influences.

Not aware? If they were mentally handicapped or otherwise impaired, I could understand saying they were unaware of what they were doing, but this was planned out and executed. They knew what they were doing. They knew it was wrong and they did it anyway. It's the same thing as any other criminal act that's carried out by anyone else intelligent enough to go through high school.
Regardless of their mental state, what they did does indeed deserve punishment. I don't care how young you are, pulling off a coordinated kidnapping, imprisonment and gang beating should land your ass behind bars.
