My girlfriend is looking for a digital camera, and she is probably gonna use it for various art-experiments if I know her right, so she needs decent resolutions and good quality. But Not something too advanced with tele-lenses and stuff, but a good camera for "normal" use, and a she has a budget around 500$.
What brands can you recommend?
What should we look out for/ what should we avoid?
What specs are good and which are bad?

For small compact cameras go for Canon IXUS range. For digital SLR's go for Nikon D40/D60.

Canon or what evers EOS 40D or whatever has like a 200 dollar coupon right now, bringing it's price down to 400-500 dollars. Which is a really really good deal.

For a non-slr (i.e. none of the removable lens crap) I suggest any of the Canon SLR-like cameras. Also good are the Panasonics. Stay the fuck away from Kodak, HP, and Sony. Fuji is alright, but they don't blow my skirt up.
If you wanna go for an SLR (but a cheap one) Canon's Digital Rebel series are cheap now. Anything from the Digital Rebel XT onwards would be good options. They might also be known as the 350d, 400d, and 450d. Be aware that SLR cameras (removable lenses) can NOT record video.

Hasselblad H3D. Totally worth it.
