Why the HELL does my hand cramp up so bad when I play barre chords? Especially Bb type barres... What's the proper posture here? I'm self taught..

Think you could post a picture of the chord as you play it? I used to get cramps all the time doing these (and playing in general) but if you run through a few of them a couple times a day it should clear up within like 3-4 days.

I think that's just your hand not being used to the form. Practice it and it'll get stronger.

Or you could use lighter strings so it won't take as much pressure to push them down.

This is a common question for new guitarists. Barre chrords are the hardest on your hand. One thing you shuld do is warm up your hand. Many people use those stress squeeze toys to help. The worst area of fatigue is usually between the thumb and index finger. This is the clamping muscle. The trick is to find the most comfortable position while playing barre chords. I usually have my thimb anchered a bit over half way behind the neck and almost paralell to the index finger.

Thumb placement

I teach my students this technique to streangthen your fret hand.
Just use your thumb and index finger only across the fretbord. Find the most comfortable position. For me it's having the e string in the middle of my finget tip. Then pick all the strings so each one rings. Move the fret hand up one fret and pick all the strings. Do this all the way to the 12th fret and back. Then when you feel the "Burn" stop for a bit.

This is usefull

This thing is great I've got one,

When your hand gets tired you can use the thumb over the E and A strings. Your index finger on the G B E strings.

Like this but my thumb feels better on just the top 2 strings.

This is more common with blues players. You'll see vids of hendrix and page using this as well as clapton.

Here's a google search
