PORT ALBERNI -- A senior being treated for a respiratory illness at a Port Alberni hospital was forced to sleep in a bathroom until a room became available at the overcrowded health facility.

The female patient, who had been hospitalized for a week, was first given a maternity room. But when a woman in labour needed the space, the senior was shuffled to the bathroom.

"We're a bit of a gong show up here," said Ellen Brown, site manager at West Coast General Hospital.

Mobility is the key issue, she said.

"This patient is able to get around on a walker, so she was transferred from the maternity bed," Brown said. "When somebody comes in and they're five centimetres dilated, we've got to get them in -- and we can't stick them in a tub room."

Brown blames the overcrowding on a worker shortage due to the nurses' training schedule. She said hospital officials planned the training for what is historically a low-occupancy time.

Brown said the hospital will be back at normal capacity on Monday.



Please make more cuts to health care. Then raise your salaries to $300,000 a year. No need to worry when they die it will just remove the sick from the herd. Oh but if your family gets sick, you'll fly them to a better hospital.
