SAN ANTONIO — Court authorities will be able to track students with a history of skipping school under a new program requiring them to wear ankle bracelets with Global Positioning System monitoring.

John Snow recreating the mass battle of tagged truants vs Civilian rent-a-cops in riot gear on that wee fold out hologram magic board thingy.
and a swingometer of injured parties to boot.

Solution: Don't want an ankle bracelet? Don't skip school.
Problem solved.

Yes the alternative of incarcerating kids is much better!

As loathe as I am to say it, Burris isn't entirely wrong. From what I've heard of these plans, they're only applied in the most extreme of situations because of the draconian measures and because of the sheer fucking cost of it. However they've had an incredibly high success rate in the cities they were applied in. As long as this isn't used as the first option or a cure-all for the school's woes, then it seems as if it's been effective.
However it does put an end to the dream of a remake of Ferris Beuller's Day Off.

Besides, children HAVE to go to school if they're not dropped out, am I right?

Until they reach the age of 18 (16 in some areas, 14 if there's very special, very extenuating, and very rural circumstances).

this is at the bottom of my care list. there are much more serious affronts to civil liberty than some kid in san antonio being forced to go to school.

Simply put it's none of the school system's fucking business where you are when you're off school property. That's where it begins.
"Is ___ here?"
"No."
And that's where it fucking ends.

Not when they're legally required to be at that school unless they've dropped out...

If they didn't have the law I don't think many teens would be in school. It's kind of necessary.
Penguin
Aug 26th, 2008, 03:42 AM
That's the teens' problem, then.

Aug 26th, 2008, 03:47 AM
Like or not those teens DO become the state's problem...
Penguin
Aug 26th, 2008, 03:55 AM
Not really. You can force them to show up, but you can't force them to learn anything. Frankly, sticking people who don't want to be there in classrooms with everyone else just makes it worse for everyone.
Burris
Aug 26th, 2008, 04:01 AM
then the state pays them when they fuck up.

I'm a fan of educating the dumbasses so they AT LEAST won't sound like they have a wad of cotton in their mouths when they talk. But I am against educating the free thought out of them. Most the teachers I had basically wanted us to be good little robots and we'd get in trouble if we thought "outside the box".

I am in favor of schooling, don't get me wrong I'm a fucking straight-a scholarship-winning over-achiever, but I don't like how the US is becoming a nanny stater rather than forcing parents to be, you know, parents. And honestly, I sometimes doubt a lot of these worst-of-the-worst this system is targeting will rely benefit from being forced to sit at school, not paying much attention.

Agreed, this nanny state bullshit isn't the way to go. The parents need to step up and actually pay attention to and teach their kids how to operate in society and actually achieve something instead of mooch off the system.

There is another school program that forces parents to sit in detention with their kids when their kids are repeat offenders.
That had good results but a lot of pissed off people, so naturally they stopped it.

Yes, lets stop what works. Always done good in the past. :D People don't like to be called on their flaws and fuck ups even though it can lead to a little thing called "learning".

Our education system is based on making people feel good about themselves, not teaching them. So everyone becomes a self-entitled fuckhead who thinks he deserves more than another.

Personally at this point I'd put my kids into a private school where the teacher's job is directly tied to how well they educate my kids.
But I also would move out of the country and to a nicer place to do it.

Why do people always spell Sweden as Sweeden.
Or "lose" as "loose" for that matter. I remember in my composition class my prof said "I never thought I'd have to say this to college freshman, but here"
and wrote the definitions of loose and lose on the board. It was hilarious.
