ok i just looked at my power supply on my comp and on the input it says this
input 100-127v-6a, 200-240v-3a 50/60 hz

so what is the max and min input voltage on my power supply? would the min be 100 and the max be 240?
and will it work on an outlet supplying only 110v?

The United States uses I believe the first standard there which is 100-127V AC in their power outlets while most of Europe uses somewhere around 200-240V AC. So depending on what your specific country's standard is, it should work either way as long as you have the correct power brick.

For fuck's sake make sure you have the switch set the right way. You need to set it to the voltage you're NOT using. So if you're on a 110v outlet, put the switch onto 220v.

On my power supply, it says 115. You push the switch and it covers the not used voltage, showing the one you are.

^^ You should see the correct voltage.

No. I enjoy giving the pain, not getting it.

Besides, we all know Sonic can't stand to get even close to me. He's so mean. I sent him a nice thank you note for the Christmas present he gave me and he still hates me. :(

Sonic once told me that my uncle who died of AIDS deserved it because he was gay.

Sonic
Oct 10th, 2008, 10:18 PM
I never said that. I have no idea where you got that from. You brought that up once before. You
gotta have me mistaken with somebody else. When we had the first secret santa thread, you ended
up with Cheeto's name and you didn't send him anything. You were a complete toolbag and didn't give
a shit about anybody else. When Cheeto didn't get anything, I contacted DaX (he was running the
secret santa thread) and got Cheeto's address. I sent him a gift, despite already sending my secret
santa person (Pramjockey). If I really hated people who are gay or who had been, I wouldn't have
done that, would I? I've always said the same thing. I don't agree with it, I think it is wrong, but
I don't hate anybody for it. The whole love the sinner/hate the sin deal. Given that our forums are
completly archived in several places, you can go search them all. I obviously never said that.

It was in an AIM conversation you had with me when I was 16. Haha, obviously you are more touchy about it than I am. Chill out homeskillet.

Sonic
Oct 10th, 2008, 11:08 PM
You must have inferred, cause I never said that. I might have said the life he lived made him more
prone to that, so it was partially his own doing. Just like druggies are more prone to getting HIV,
especially in the 80s when HIV knowledge was poor. He didn't deserve to die, but his lifestye most
likely contributed.

On the next "The Mess Hall of Our Lives", Sonic and Stellar run into each other in a dark alley when no one else is around. Who is going to be left at the end of it?

Since this thread is about electricity already, can anyone tell me why the fuck does my cable modem need more voltage than a video camera?

Modem - 12V
Camcorder - 8.4V

12volt is fairly common for electrical equipment. 12, 5, and 3 volt are all common in your computer. It's the amps that measure how much energy it's actually using.

bumping an old thread, is it safe to plug this: http://www.harriscomm.com/catalog/images/IT-SURGE.jpg

into this: http://trustypony.com/wp-content/upload ... ection.jpg (http://trustypony.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/universal-adaptor-with-surge-protection.jpg)

and then plug it into a two prong outlet in japan like this: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbvi ... outlet.jpg (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/3662773/2/istockphoto_3662773_two_prong_outlet.jpg)

and not cause any harm to my desktop?

serious answer please

Without really knowing how many other devices are going to be plugged into it along with how much power each thing uses, you can't really say. And the three prong outlets just have a ground so it's no biggy

You don't get UBERPOWER from the third prong.

Beware the voltages. Japan IIRC uses 220V A/C. The US uses 110V. So if your power strip only can handle 110 volts it won't work. And if your PC's PSU is still set to 110Volt when you plug it into a Japanese 220 outlet...well...on the plus side you'd get to buy a new computer.

Better option is to get a voltage converting powerstrip or just get a power cord in Japan that'll plug into their outlets and then switch your computer's PSU to 220.

Japan uses 100V. Just leave it at 110 and it will be within the 10-15% necessary.

Come on, it took less time to Google Japan's voltage than it did to type this post.

Voltage does not necessarily imply how much actual power it's consuming. The static zap you get off a door knob is about 50,000 volts, but there's almost zero power in it.

My step dad once tried to explain it to me using water as the example. I don't remember exactly how he worded it, I just remember the basic message is that amps or watts is how you measure how much power a device is consuming.

Current(amps) is what kills you. That's how a 12 volt car battery can hurt you more than a 110 volt outlet. A car battery can have 550-800 amps, opposed to your regular 110 outlet which is limited to 15 amps.

50 tons of water can't kill you if it was coming through a straw?

50lbs of water can kill you if applied to you through one of those fire hoses.

50 tons of water could kill you if it came through the straw with enough velocity. Look at those water jet cutters that can carve through steel.

I think that was how he explained it. Current (amps) is like the pressure of the water, voltage is like the width of the tube.

Guy Montag

Voltage is just potential. Amperes is the measurement of voltage after the resistance of the circuit. Voltage is like the water behind the dam. The aperture of the gates could be considered the resistance(ohms), and the flow out from the dam the amperage.
