Obviously just a bad install. It happens. I once installed winXp, it fucked up, i installed it again and it was fine. Restore and try again.

However, if it still hangs, try removing your RAM sticks.

I tried ato repair my install with the win xp cd, but now my partion is unknown...i assume that means its totally fucked and inaccessable. Ive tried entering the win xp recovery console but that doesnt let me enter any commands. I actually cannot do anything.

Safe mode doesnt boot, its stuck on the line MUP.sys

If I do a fresh install of XP thatll be everything gone right?

I have a wireless LAN network which was set up by our tech-friend. If i reinstall XP from the disc, that will be gone right? Im using my laptop which is my only computer-life line at the minute, if I reinstall and lose the wireless internet I will be up shit-fucking-creek.

I was just thinking about my wireless connection. Where is it 'stored'? If my main PC is wiped clean, will the wirelss connection still be around? in theory all I do is connect to it with both PC and laptop.

So is the wireless internet 'in limbo' or if the main PC is wiped, itll be gone forever. Or does the initial set up of it remain, regardless of my PCs state, only when the PC is reinstalled, I will need to be able to connect to it again?

Im only worried about the LAN because if that goes im fucked, if I knew how to do it from scratch, id just reformat n reinstall with no probs

I have no idea what you just said.

ye its hard to explain.

alright, A wireless internet LAN. Lets multiple computers pick up my internet right?

It was set up on my main computer (the pc). So if the PC has a clean install of windows XP, will that delete the wireless internet LAN? Because it was set up there.

OR

Will the wireless internet LAN remain, and once I reinstall XP on the CD, I can just detect the wireless LAN again as an internet connection.

Having a fresh install of xp on the PC will delete the LAN won't it, because it was all set up on the PC yeah?

It may pickup your wireless network connection, was it built in to your computer...is it a laptop?

Ye the wireless was set up on the PC because it was the first computer in our house, then we got a laptop and then the guy installed the wireless lan, router and shit.

So if the PC is wiped, all of that will be reset and ill have nothing i assume.

unless the Lan is 'on the internet' and all I have to do is connect to my routers IP, ive no idea about this area of expertise so im jus pickin at straws lol

You will be able to get the wireless LAN back, it *may* pick it up automatically or you may need the CD for it...then it's quite easy to connect it to a wireless network.

Not necessarily. If you delete all your old windows files and install then everything will be there (all your documents). If you format your drive, though, then yes, you will lose everything.

Sounds like your HDD may be fucked (wasn't that the conclusion in another of your threads)?

If you re-install windows, do NOT use the same username that your computer is currently setup to use...otherwise it will overwrite your My Documents, Desktop, etc with the default files and you will lose them.

Not true. It will just make username.0001(something to that effect) the name under documents and settings.

As for your wireless, the settings (SSID, encryption mode and key) are all stored in the wireless router/access point. You will have to add the wireless network again once everything is installed, generally you can see all the settings inside the router; the key might be masked in which case you would have to change it to something you know and change the key on any machines connected to it.
