Try Premiere Elements first to learn the basics. If you need something really basic, Windows Movie Maker.

Avid is what pro houses use, but it's a monstrous resource hog (moreso than, say, premiere)...but it's good to use.

Motion and Shake? But they are high end and very expensive. Still, something to put on the table.

Quick question,
Whats the best program to use to like edit something out of a video that shouldn't be there? I.E. A string holding something in the air so it looks like it is flying.

Either that or separate frames and paint them out with appropriate software. That's what LucasFilm did with I think SW EPIII: each frame with C-3PO had to be corrected manually to remove reflections off his body.

Final Cut Pro and Motion are the two best video editing software programs I have used at my work. Unfortunately, they're expensive and not so user-friendly.

And only available for mac. Final cut express is a helluva lot cheaper but still powerful.

Sony Vegas 6. It's only 120 dollars and is probably the best product you'll find at a low price. I have Sony Vegas 8 Pro and it works great for me.

Final Cut Pro if you have a Mac, Premiere otherwise.
Avid if you have the cash to splash.

I have Final Cut Pro, but no Mac. I tried running a VMWare image of a MAC OSX and install Final Cut Pro on it, but it didn't work because apparently VMWare doesn't have enough RAM lol. But I have Avid Media Composer, I'm trying to learn how to use it, its not that easy lol
