Seriously... what is the intent here? I don't understand. It's not going to further peace and understanding, which seems to be a cop out answer to make people feel warm inside.

Who cares. Really. I hardly think it will be front for radical Islam, and even if it is there really isn't a better place for it, with all the anti-terrorism funding New York receives.
I dont have any probs with them building a mosque, hell there are probably a good load of Muslems living in Manhatten (I think there where a few in the twin towers when they came down) and Americans pride thelselves on freedom of religion, no matter how nutty the person. So, they have a right to a place of worship just like any other citizen in the US.
I dont think that allowing them to use that name is of the best taste as it could be considered to have certain meanings. Just seems like bad form to me.
Have they realy gone for that name - like officialy requested it registered etc? Or, is it just heresay or rumours and typical fear mongering and Chinese whispers?
I mean, surely the officials wouldnt let something like that go ahead?
Its not even an original name anyway http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_M...f_C%C3%B3rdoba
Now, I'm all for religious and cultural tolerance. but to build a 13 story mosque in the vicinity of a horrible fanatical Islamic terrorist attack is basically like getting tolerance ed all over the face. It's really overdoing it. Where can the line be drawn? I honestly wish the entire ground zero area was made into a memorial park or something. It's sacred ground that no religion should build on, especially Islamic!

This whole thing is so fucking asinine. For one thing, "Ground Zero Mosque" is a hopeless misnomer--it's not at Ground Zero. It's several blocks away, and last I checked religious freedoms were guaranteed in our part of the world.
It's also not a 13-story mosque, it's a fucking Muslim-run community centre. It's supposed to have a pool, a gym, a basketball court, an auditorium, a restaurant, a cooking school, a library, art studios, a daycare, and a fucking 9/11 memorial. Oh, the humanity! Calling it a '13-story mosque' is completely disingenuous, it'd be like calling the planned Freedom Tower a '105-story Starbucks' just because it happens to have a Starbucks in the lobby (for instance).
And as much as I hate to invoke Jon Stewart, he at least has a point: if this is such a big fucking deal, why isn't anyone crying about Catholic churches near playgrounds? What, they're off the hook because it's only a few who don't represent the majority committing offenses? Goddamn, guess what? It's the same fucking thing.
Oh and hey, a mosque was built in the Pentagon a month after 9/11. So where was the butthurt then?
This whole flap is just a very visible symptom of America coping with what its constitution guarantees even after the cultural homogeny is gone.
Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you have to.
