Call me old fashioned but I think any body armour that sets on fire when it's struck by a weapon is kind of a failure.

Yeah. I mean, every fandom (and canon) talking-up of stormtrooper armor simply fails to match its performance on-screen. If a helmet can't stop a head-sized falling rock, dropped from a fairly low height, from instantly incapacitating the person wearing the helmet, it's garbage.

I think the stormtrooper-fail of the original trilogy was simply a symptom of how enemy grunts were treated in films back then, where germans or their analogous counterparts were mowed down. Good thing new troopers (clone troopers, old republic troopers) tackle dark jedi and doesn't afraid.

Actually, I remember George Lucas saying in one of those "the making-of" videos that the Stormtroopers getting their asses handed to them by the Ewoks was supposed to be "kinda symbolic" of the low-tech Viet Cong beating the high-tech US army.
