    Default Need book recommendations

Got a Kindle Fire for my birthday which I really like. Now I need some books to put on it. I really like Vonnegut but have read all his work. Also like Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide. As I have grown older though, I usually don't read fiction but am not opposed to some good Sci-Fi. I usually only read non-fiction and authors that I see on The Daily Show. So, if anyone has anything they like or would recommend, let me have them...

I've also read the Dune series from Dune to Chapterhouse.

Paging Faceman to thread #13944, DVD mailer needed ASAP.

I don't read Sci-Fi too much so my only advice for recommendations is to check out the list of winners and nominees from the Nebula Awards and Hugo Awards. You should be able to find some decent books that interest you by going over those lists.

For non-fiction I usually lend out Guns, Germs and Steel, Collapse, A Short History of Nearly Everything, A Brief History of Time/A Briefer History of Time and Lies My Teacher Told Me. Chances are you might have already read some of these though.

If I were to force-read you my favorite book than that would be Suttree.

For straight novels, Cormac McCarthy and Don Delillo come to mind.

For Science Fiction...Have you read any Orson Scott Card? He's best known for Ender's Game (which I haven't actually read), but I did come across a collection of his short stories that I found compelling. He's currently known in some corners of the internet for being a mormon and actively against the legalization of Gay Marriage...so you should know that before mentioning his name on a message board (like, say, I just did) and then being summarily e-lynched.

Also, are you a fan of alternate history? If so, Harry Turtledove. The Guns of the South is a stand-alone althist/scifi about the South winning the Civil War, via AK-47s from the future, but even more interesting, and sprouting out of that original book, is the series of series about the CSA winning independence and then spinning through the rest of the 19th and 20th century (and all that came with it).

The Confederacy wins the American Civil War and continues to exist as an independent nation into the mid-20th century (The names above are used by fans, as the overall series has no official title).

If you want some sci-fi, give John Ringo a shot. I haven't read all of his books, but he's got a pretty fair selection. One of my favorites is The Last Centurion, which is really more of a political sci-fi than his others, which lean more towards military type sci-fi.

He's got three other series that I really enjoyed too, the Aldenata something or other, starts with A Hymn Before Battle, Live Free or Die (can't remember the series name, but there's three of them so far) and of course, Ghost. Which starts with a book of three short stories...well, two short stories and one porn. But the rest of the series is a ton of fun.

For over the top bullshit action movie, get Matt Reilly. Can't go wrong there.

However, if you like magic, give Jim Butcher a shot. The Dresden Files (and do not judge it from the SyFy series) is absolutely fantastic. His other series, The Furies of Calderon is pretty nifty too.

For slightly steampunk, 1920s urban fantasy: The Grimnoir Chronicles by Larry Correia
For modern urban fantasy, the Monster Hunter International series by the same guy

If you've not read any John Scalzi yet, you should definitely give his Old Man's War series a shot (starting with the eponymous) - so difficult to put down that I went through the latest one in a few hours.
In a similar vein, I'd recommend grabbing anything you can find by Charles Stross. He's done some harder SF stuff (Accelerando, Singularity Sky, Iron Sunrise, Glasshouse - the latter being the best of these IMHO) but his best work is definitely the 'Laundry' series. Think Lovecraft meets James Bond meets tech-geek and you're roughly a third of the way there. Start with The Atrocity Archives, then The Jennifer Morgue and onto the more recent The Fuller Memorandum.

If you want something a little more grounded in reality, I can also recommend Cory Doctorow's Makers - a really interesting novel based on the idea of 'hacking' as a tech movement and the implications for the wider economy.

Oh, also, a recommendation from a man I trust: Jim Butcher.

I haven't read any of his stuff yet, but it's high on my list.

EDIT: Ferrets! I see Fenris has bested me to the draw.

i need book recommendations also. I like sci fi and fantasy.

Ive gone through the song of fire and ice (game of thrones) books, king killer chronicles and dark tower series books and need something to fill the gap until the next fire and ice and king killer series books come out. Hard to wait for these books to come out as it usually takes years for the next in the series to come out.

Have you tried Scott Lynch's stuff? The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies are both excellent.

I've been tearing up some books lately now that I got an e-reader and a metric fuck ton of downloaded (maaaaaybe sorta pirated) books. But for ones that I've been enjoying, mostly fictional: James Patterson (the Alex Cross series, crime thrillers), Jon Land (no H in his name, like Ludlum, a conspiracy writer), Robert Ludlum (Bourne series), China Meiville (scifi writer), Neil Stephenson (ohmygodwtfbbq I LOVE Snow Crash), Neil Gaiman (he writes grown up fairy tales, if you liked the Dark Tower series but found it too slow or nonsensical, try him), will update more when I get home and I can raid my collection further.
