The Day of the Tryffids and Chocky by JOhn Wyndham. Chocky is a great Sci-Fi short story and I've juts got round to reading Triffids which was different enough to the screen versions and was also really enjoyable.

I am Legend is also worth checking out - its NOTHING like the crap Will Smith film.

For some reason this popped up on new threads and thought I'd leave my 2 cents: Of course, you must read Isaac Asimov's Foundation series, and Anne McCaffrey's Dragonsdawn series! They're both classic sci-fi, with Asimov being much more brainy..
Sometimes, at the end of the day, I just sit back, relax and realize: "Damn, it feels good to be a gangster."

Cheeto - Some of Stephenson's other books are absolutely AWFUL to get through. I've only stopped reading three books in my life time, and his is one of them. Snow Crash is outstanding though.

And if you like Cross, check out the Prey series by John Sanford. Same vein of thriller, but much more brutal detective.

I've recently been reading alot of Phillip K Dick as well...damn I wish I found him sooner. A Scanner Darkly is an absolute mindfuck of a book, and his short stories that spawned Total Recall (We Can Remember it For you Wholesale), Minority Report, Screamers (Second Variety) and Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - starting that one tonight) are great short reads.

Latzen - Glad to see another Butcher fan! I got my old roommate absolutely addicted to the Dresden series, I think he cried a little when I moved out.

Lotta good books in here. I started reading Heinlein because of a friend of mine and the number of apperances he makes on this list.

Read it.Liked it. Reminded me of a friend of mine.

Went with Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer as my first download. Really liked it but it also pisses me off reading things like this and seeing again how Fucked Up our government can be. I have rean Into the Wild and Into the Wind so was pretty sure i'd like this. He's a good author. Next, I got a free month of Prime on Amazon so I "borrowed" (says in a quiet whipered voice) Chelsea Handler - My Horizontal Life.....I know, I know but I'm kind of liking it. I'll sew my balls back on when I've finished it.

Blood Meridan, by Cormac McCarthy. Cowboys n' Indians but not as you've known it before. Quite simply the most vicious nasty book i've read. Makes his other book The Road seem like walk in the park by comparison.

Just check other people views and buy it.

I need to read more PKD. Awesome writer.

If religion or theology or New Testament criticism interest you, how about Bart Ehrman's books?

His current one, Forged, is available as an e-book as well as an audio book:
