Omgggg, I just reinstalled half life and installed 3.1. MEMORIES. The horrible explosion buttons, low res menu, orange text and funky text for the options.

I couldn't get ingame though due to a DLL error, i'm not running 1.1.1.0 (downloading) so that's probably why.

we gotta play it this way.

    Here's how to do it:
(NOTE: The following instructions are pointless, however, because a Steam update fubar'ed it. If you look in the console, it's not loading the sprites.

    Fancy a 3.1 or a 2.0 or even 1.3 dod on steam?

    HOW-TO: old school dod :)

First of all you need to grab yourself a copy of DOD 3.1 and get it all extracted out. Now normally it will give you a folder called "dod" but this causes problems.

If you use the "dod" folder for 3.1 in the steam client (player side) trying to launch the game makes steam think you are playing 1.x so it gets confused and tries to do an update which really ****s things up. So rename the "dod" folder to "dod_31" and put it in your "SteamApps\<email>\half-life" folder.

Next up, inside the "dod_31" folder find the file "liblist.gam" and edit the line that says "game" to have the value "Day of Defeat 3.1b". This isnt critical but it just changes the name that shows up in the steam games menu.

    OK, thats the client sorted...

Now, to make the dedicated server run ints much the same. Basically take your renamed "dod_31" folder and place it inside your HLDS folder.

Start the server as per normal but with the parameter "-game dod_31". If your running the Win32 version you get the nice VGUI to configure the server.

This part is REALLY important. Consistency of the "dod_31" is crucial between client and server or they wont see each other.

From the clients point of view if you install 3.1 as a folder named "dod" although it shows up as a Third Party game in Steam, when you start it it will still filter servers to those playing "dod" and hence you will see 1.x servers too. Obviously you cant connect to them and its hard to see which are running 3.1.

So by calling the folder "dod_31" the games filter looks for servers playing dod_31 and filters out the 1.0 servers.

Now to compliment this, the HLDS needs to have its 3.1 folder called "dod_31" so that the the server shows up as playing dod_31 which is what the steam client is searching for!

    Make sense? Hope so!

Anyway, I installed DoD 3.1 on a Win32 Dedicated server today and fired it up and then, from steam using the same dod_31 rule looked for it - voila! There it was, sadly, the only dod_31 steam server.

But I connected to it no problems at all, fully authenticated via steam and it showed me as playing with my Steam ID, etc.

The only issue as a community we need to standardise on is the naming of the DoD 3.1 folder because if we start making up different names for it the clients wont be able to see the server and vice versa.

Based on the above you will be able to play any of the old WON versions of DOD, even 1.3b.

Someone please find a workaround, I'd LOVE to play 3.1b again.

I'm not sure 1.3b works 100% over Steam. My buddy and I were having crashes at some point. Actually it could have been b.c of bots. I forget now.

Thats why releasing an installer(s) with these modified files would be great. saving people the small effort to change the files themselves and they can just play straight away, like any mod

I was going to test with Hamachi this weekend and if I could get it working I'd leave my home desktop running a server or two for a week or two until I can get my main server online.

Only downside I see with Hamachi is that unless we pay for the premium version, we're limited to 16 clients per network and 16 networks generated. So assuming no one minds 16 player games, I was thinking we can have one network be Beta 1 and another network be Beta 3. Though I'd be tempted to make a third network of Beta 1.3b and a 4th of Beta 3 para only. Though that might dilute the player base, plus wear down the server. Here are the specs for my dedicated server:

Athlon XP 1900+, 512MB ram, Linux, 2mb upstream Fios. How many games do you think a machine like that could host?

Hi, I'm a fan of DOD 3.1 too. Does anybody have a server now?

Maybe I can setup a server on my pc. I only search for other guys who are interested in DOD to.
