Beta 2.0 was the beginning of the end. Everything wrong with DoD can be traced back to that POS.

Eh I wouldn't go that far. Beta 1.3b was great for what it was, and IMO the betas reached their peak in 3.0. 3.1 messed with weapon balancing just enough to throw things off.

Beta 2.0 was the only iteration that had such a backlash, it got a DoD team member out to post a thread in General saying "Stop the h8! What's you beef with [beta/version]?"

2.0 was the beta, after all, where Axis was stacked on all maps, the team thought beach maps that were "target practice for the Axis" was a bright idea when they'd assraped the weapon balance with a sandpaper condom, and let's not forget Avalanche with it's fucking brilliant wall bug that ensured the Grenadier's four tactical nukes killed everyone in spawn before they could take one step that was essentially never properly addressed until retail.

Instead of actually addressing the real issues with the game, they pussyfooted around in 2.1 and basically kept all the problems while making the machine guns retarded. Beta 3.0 was the closest the betas came to achieving some semblance of balance, and then they went and fucked it up in 3.1. Retail was playable, but only just.

Source is entirely turn-your-brain-off entertainment, random run-and-gun, and for the cost, plus the machine required to run it because it's Valve's tech demo buttmonkey outside of the HL2 Episodes, it's just not worth it.

Soruce was the ultimate betrayal to players and communities. The devs quickly forgot very people who put them there, without players and communities there mod that became a piss poor retail would have never of happened.
