    Default Need help with homework

    Hey guys,

I dunno if this is the best place to ask for help, but I'll give it a shot. For my class, I'm supposed to interview a network administrator, but as I just had surgery I can't really do that right now, so I was wondering if anyone could fill out this questioner for me for my class that works with networks and stuff.

#1 What topology does the LAN use?
#2 What protocol does the LAN use?
#3 What is the LAN’s physical medium?
#4 Is the physical medium baseband or broadband?
#5 What kinds of devices are connected to the LAN?
#6 Is the LAN connected to other LANs? If so, how?
#7 What is the LAN’s main purpose?
#8 What services does the LAN provide users?
#9 What resources are shared by users on the LAN?
#10 If the LAN has a server, what operating system does it use?

If you could please answer this with out all of the bull shit, I would be very grateful.

    Thanks

I mistook you as being Stephenson for a second because he also has a Joker avatar, although you were first.

Not a network admin but might give it a try:

#1 What topology does the LAN use?
    no idea

#2 What protocol does the LAN use?
    TCP / IP no?
#3 What is the LAN’s physical medium?
    ethernet cables (catX) ?

#4 Is the physical medium baseband or broadband?
    no idea

#5 What kinds of devices are connected to the LAN?
    Modems, switches, hubs, PCs

#6 Is the LAN connected to other LANs? If so, how?
Yes, via... umm... modems or hubs maybe? I mean, the internet is basically many connected lans

#7 What is the LAN’s main purpose?
to allow exchange of information between computers without using a proxy medium (floppies, cds) ?

#8 What services does the LAN provide users?
    file sharing, gaming...?

#9 What resources are shared by users on the LAN?
data (hard drive), internet, and others

#10 If the LAN has a server, what operating system does it use?
No clue... any one that supports a server (Apache can run on a lot of things from windows to linux)

    Not a network admin
Sorry. I do work at my college (Soka University of America) as a "IT Multimedia Assistant" but that's more of video / graphic editing stuff than networking. My answers were pretty much what I learned by myself and may be 100% wrong so don't take them as facts.

Fuck i hate it when i hit the backspace and it goes back a freaking page instead of deleting a character.

#1 What topology does the LAN use?

Depends on what the people who set it up used. star or extended star topography is the most likely.
It typically uses more cabling than other topography's though the network is more fault tolerant if a computer or cable goes on the network. Wont take the whole network down.

#2 What protocol does the LAN use?

TCP/IP is the most common protocol stack

#3 What is the LAN’s physical medium?

Its cabling. such as UTP/STP (rj45 cables)
    UTP = unshielded twisted pair
    STP = shielded twisted pair

Only real difference is a layer of foil inside the STP cable that helps reduce cross talk and other forms of interference. UTP has a tighter and more well defined set of standards, though STP cabling typically lives up the those same standards and have the added bonus of shielding. More expensive though.

#4 Is the physical medium baseband or broadband?

Baseband is anolog (if i recall) and uses coaxial cable normally, broadband is digital and uses rj45, fibre optics and what not
edit: it would most likely be broadband this day of age. baseband doesnt cut it anymore. (note: using a coaxial cable to connect your cable modem is different. its not an entire network of coaxial cable)

#5 What kinds of devices are connected to the LAN?

Hubs and switches, routers, nics, etc.

#6 Is the LAN connected to other LANs? If so, how?

It is, and usually through the use of either a router, switch or hub.
Thats all the internet is really. A great big mesh topography.
Also you could probably say that this network is using custom subnetting to make it easier to regulate and identify traffic from different departments and computers.

#7 What is the LAN’s main purpose?

    To share porn.

#8 What services does the LAN provide users?

    Porn

#9 What resources are shared by users on the LAN?

Porn? (i figure you can figure out these three questions.)

#10 If the LAN has a server, what operating system does it use?

. dude, that really depends. Maybe windows server 2003
