Any books you might recommend or just pretty much prod around with trial and error and start with websites?
Mostly what I'm needing is windows file and printer sharing with some internet protocols and security.

Learning how to use the network section in windows is a big deal. Specialy when shering files to a server. Setting up domains and shared email. Poke around that link I gave you. A bud sent me it. Also we are adding aserver here and may have exchange so when that gets up. Our IT consultant is showing me how to run and manipulate it.

    Looking forward to that!

We already have a server set up here (shitty I might ad). My boss set it all up and his mind is still stuck in the days on windows 95. So I'm needing to learn as much as I can to redo it so its 1 secure, and 2 actually works.

Lucky you got the IT guy gonna teach you.

    Oh shit...
What operating sustem is on the server and is it set up as just a standard data storage unit. Or does it control the office PC's like terminals.

Dude I'm glad I ain't fucking with it. Be ral carefull on the network settings. You could loose complete funtionality.
and do that to the system

Windows XP Pro, its pretty much just data storage, but sadly it controls the internet too, if I'm not mistaken. I think he was trying to make it terminal access too, but thank god he failed at that and just made it data. Luckily I'm experienced in how he fucks things up, but I gave up on the why he tried to do it the way he did. It never makes any sense.

You Prally have the internet modem hooked up to a hub or a router. The server itself in the network settings should tell you if it is the main hub.
    XPpro for a server...
Well it's just file sharing then.
But check the network settings and the modem link to see if the server is running like a master hub.
