Default windows xp Explorer freezing on startup?

    Stupid machines.....

My PC boots up and then everything locks up, start bar, icons, nothing. The hard-drive activity light isn't stuck or flashing alot, it's just plodding away like it would normally on the desktop.

Ive disabled all start up apps and services except my anti virus (Avast). safe mode my pc works fine, with all software disabled on start up I dunno what the fuck is up. Ive done nothing and its doing this out of the blue.

very annoying. what can i do

    many disk errors from today.

I have been having a few HDD related crashes recently (HDD light stays on, then crash!). I then have to reboot then PC says insert boot device or some shit. I turn off pc, then listen to something whizz off from within the PC, it sounds like the HDD i think, sounds like it powers down. I turn the pc back on and it works fine.

But now its hit fever pitch.

I have disabled my Anti virus services and processes and it works now, although very tentatively, everything is slow and something is still wrong I can tell.

Sounds like your HDD might be about ready to die.
