Web Hosting and Forum Setup

Ok, the motorcycle track/racing organization I belong to needs new hosting. it will consist of a
smallish webpage and a forum of perhaps 50% tmh activity level. Godaddy hosting looks pretty
good, but I'm not sure what is out there. I've found godaddy to be pretty reliable, for the most
part.

El Capitan, how much bandwidth does our forum use a month?

I've admined several forums, but never set one up. I know html code but not java or any
script. What all do I need? What clients do I need? Do you recommend phpbb? Will I need any
help setting it up. Do I need anything special from a host ot make it work?

Completely free hosting

1500 MB Disk Space, 100 GB Data Transfer, which should be enough for a forum assuming it isn't getting hammered daily with data traffic. I believe you can add on extra bandwith for a fee if required, to the free package.

Comes with cPanel and Fantastico which will allow simple installation of forums, phbb2 or SMF based ones, among other things such as Coppermine Photo Gallery, CMS such as Wordpress, Joomla, OS Commerce and a load of other bolt ons. Pretty much the usual stuff you get with Fantastico.

Last forum I installed with Fantastico was an SMF based forum and It's a cinch to install and set up.

I also found the SMF forums a lot more secure than the phpBB2 forums when it came to spam bots registering and posting shit.

I haven't used 000webhost but a lot of folk have commented that it's pretty good ( especially considering it costs a big, fat nadda ).

I'm going to sign up with them for a free account at some point over the next month and have a play around with some things just for the hell of it.

My main hosting package I use for business and all my clients websites is with a mob called EUK Host who I can highly recommend. I'm on their Linux based Platinum package but plan to upgrade to a reseller package this year, not because I'm interested in reselling, but purely for the extra flexibility afforded by the package itself.

100GB of space and 1TB of bandwidth. That's more than someone will ever use in most cases.

By the way, I don't believe it expired as people are still registering.

Should I go with PHPbb? We have SMF on our current page, but we still get bot registrations

Allegedly - very reliable.

As I've said, on another forum I frequent, quite a few folk have signed up with them and found the service to be excellent.

I have no idea what customer/client support is like if a problem should arise, however it seems pretty good considering it is free.

Don't think there is a "catch", per sae.

As far as forums go, I dunno, may have been coincidence as far as the issues I had with bots signing up went the last time when I used phpBB2.

What I will say though, is because I switched over to SMF after that and stuck with them, I got used to the way SMF works so I know my way around it pretty well now.

Just go with one, stick with it and see how it goes then learn it inside out if it works for ya.

At the time of typing this, I'm taking a tea break between working on 3 different clients websites, all of which are presenting their own unique problems and issues ( especially two of them - both clients have no idea how the intraweb works nor what can/cannot be achieved by a web designer for the initial price quoted........[/sighs] ).

I would rather pay and feel comfortable knowing my site is not going to go down easily and be around a while...it's like paying for that security, rather than going for the free option and having to check your site is still there every 5 minutes...and be on top of backups constantly.

Totally agree, you certainly get what you pay for.

For paid hosting, I haven't had any major hassles with the mob I'm with just now, EUK Host.
